I am looking for a really good book to take on holiday. I have heard mixed reviews on this book.
I love a book that sort of takes you into another world. I loved Harry Potter for this reason. Some of the LOTR I quite liked. Just wondering if anyone has read this series? Think there is 4 books.
ThanksIs Game of Thrones a good book?
Game of Thrones is a very good book. The characters are believable, the scenarios make sense, and the story grips you right away! The author is already being called "The American Tolkien", and I agree with the title. He's very good.
Also, if you like stories that take you into another world (and you loved Harry Potter for just that reason) then I'm going to give you a list of some other books and series that I think you will like. I've read all of these, and I really liked them:
A Princess of Mars, by Edgar Rice Burroughs. ~ Confederate Army colonel John Carter journeys to a savage Mars full of 9' tall warriors, six-legged lions, and a beautiful princess. First written in 1914, this 11-book series is still extremely readable and very enjoyable. It will be a CGI movie in 2012!
The Misplaced Legion by Harry Turtledove. ~ This is the beginning of a four-book series about three cohorts of Caesar's invasion of Gaul who are swept to a world of dark sorcery. Excellent characters! Turtledove has a PHD in Byzantine history, so he knows what he is talking about.
Heir to the Empire, by Timothy Zahn. ~ Five years after Return of the Jedi, Princess Leia is pregnant with her first child, and the Empire has returned, with a Grand Admiral leading them, and they're winning! The writing is so good, I found myself cheering for the Empire! First of a series of five books.
Children of the Night, by Mercedes Lackey. ~ This is the first of the Diana Tregarde books. Diana is a witch who lives in 1970's New York City. She writes romance novels to pay the bills, and fights creatures of evil on the side.
Nine Princes in Amber, by Roger Zelazny. ~ Carl Corey awakens in a private hospital where someone has been keeping him drugged and a prisoner. He soon learns that he has lost his memory, and that this is not his world at all. First of a 10-book series, and one of the best in the world.
Spellsinger, by Alan Dean Foster. ~ Law student and rock musician Jon Meriwether is pulled into a world of talking animals by a turtle wizard to fight off an invasion. He discovers that he can invoke magic too, by music! First of a seven-book series!
The Tomb, by F. Paul Wilson ~ Urban mercenary Repairman Jack confronts Hindu demons in New York City after they kidnap his girlfriend's daughter. First of the Repairman Jack books.
Riptide, by Douglas Preston %26amp; Lincoln Child. ~ $2 billion of pirate treasure is locked up in an underground vault which has claimed 300 years of treasure hunters until one man finds the key; or, has he?
The River of Dancing Gods, by Jack Chalker. ~ Joe de Oro, a Pennsylvania truck driver, picks up a female hitchhiker on a lonely stretch of Texas highway. Moments later they are both swept away by a wizard who needs their help to fight a war on another world. Joe becomes a great barbarian hero, but the hitchhiker? Well, she鈥檚 not quite human鈥? First of a five book series!
Raven, by S.A. Swiniarski. ~ A man wakes up in a storm drain covered with ice, and discovers that not only has he been turned into a vampire, but most of his memory is gone, too! Great book.
Star of Danger, by Marion Zimmer Bradley. ~ Larry Montray moves to distant planet with his father, where he learns that the alien natives are more intriguing than humans.
They Thirst, by Robert R. McCammon. ~ Bloodthirsty vampires conquer Los Angeles. A Creole witch, defrocked priest, and a standup comedian try to stop them.
