~The Mortal Instrument series by Cassandra Clare

-City of Bones

-City of Ashes

-City of Glass

-City of Fallen Angels

(Amazing series about everything from warlocks to demons, angels, vampires, and werewolves. The main focus is on Demon hunters called Shadowhunters. Amazing books.)

there's a prequel series as well, only the first is out: Clockwork Angel, the second comes out in December. For best results, read Clockwork Angel in between City of Glass and City of Fallen Angels because there's a lot of character introduction. :)

~The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins

-The Hunger Games

-Catching Fire

-Mockingjay

(Amazing series, based in the future. There are 13 districts in Northern America all run by the capitol. The districts revolt but the capitol destroys district 13. Each year as a reminder to not rebel again, the pull 2 kids, 1 boy and 1 girl, between the ages of 12 and 18 and put them in a arena to fight to the death until 1 survives.)

~The Gone series by Michael Grant

-Gone

-Hunger

-Lies

-Plague

(About a town where everyone over the age of 14 disappears. The children must learn to run everything by themselves and learn to survive. Kids and animals start developing strange mutations.)

Supposed to be 2 more books in the series. xD

~Lorian Legacies by Pittacus Lore

-I Am Number Four

-The Power of Six

(About an alien race sent here to hide out until their powers developed so they could protect us against a challenging race that destroyed their home planet.)

There are supposed to be 4 more books in the series. :P

Hope these helped and that you'll check them out even if you don't choose by answer. :)
His Dark Materials series is a good fantasy book. Also the Hunger Games was a good series and you should also try to read The Lost Gate. When you start to read The Lost Gate if you do it doesnt make sense at the begining but it makes sense if you read on in the book. They havent made a second book of The Lost Gate yet. Also Redwall is a good book series.I need a good sci fi fantasy book!?

Suggestion for fantasy novel that reads at or beyond a graduate school level?

I'm a graduate student in the psych/mental health field, but I've always had a passion for literature, especially fantasy literature. Lately, all the recent books that I've been reading have been so disappointing lately because of the reading level they are at. They are marketed towards adults, but I feel like they read at a high school or middle school level. Some examples are Game of Thrones, Malazan Book of the Fallen, Name of the Wind, and especially the Harry Dresden series (but I expected no less from that one, hehe).

I'm not sure if it's because I'm now used to reading scholarly research journals, books and articles for the past few years as a grad student where every other word has twenty syllables, haha ;) I just want something that reads at a high level (grad school level or beyond, I'll even settle for something at a college level) with a nice splash of GRE vocabulary. Suggestion please.Suggestion for fantasy novel that reads at or beyond a graduate school level?
Hahaha, "with a nice splash of GRE vocabulary". I'd say buy a GRE practice book, and for all the sample questions replace the sample names with Elven or Wizard names and make a story out of it. I'm not entirely big on fantasy( I haven't read many lesser known authors), but I'd say science fiction based works would have some higher brow words. Mostly words that deal with theoretical or metaphysical things. Basically the odd end GRE words that you question their existence, and then you realize they deal with psychology or some sort of science tend to come about in the form of science fiction more so than fantasy. Realistically though, if you were to find a book that had a vocabulary of GRE-esque words it'd be as interesting as prep book.

Yes, it's you and what they are cramming into your head. Most "scholarly research journals" aren't written well, they're merely written with a bunch of high-brow BS words. It's academic crap for academia. You've just been schooled for so long that you've been trained to believe that crap.

Meanwhile, stories are stories because they pull people in - because they aren't academia BS. Academia BS doesn't sell, because the vast majority of people recognize it for what it is - BS. You're rather stuck now, but you can get unstuck, if you want. (And part of you can remain stuck, if that's the crap you want to join in, but, hey, academia doesn't really have to be BS. It can be written clearly, so you don't have to be stuck there either.)

Isaac Asimov is famous as a college level sci-fi author. Robert Heinlein wrote at a sophisticated level without going over the top in the BS department. Tolkien, of course, is a must read, if you aren't into children's books.

And, if you have no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to academia BS, read Joseph Williams book, "Style: Toward Clarity and Grace." I think my last recommendation will help you more than any story could. Just because someone can write pages of $20 words, doesn't mean anyone should. Writing is to communicate - not to make everyone notice the writer. If the writer wants to be noticed, I'd recommend a nice neon green T-shirt with a matching blue mohawk and "Notice Me" tattooed across the face. lol

All written with that degree you seem to think is important and in every day language. ;)
im working on itSuggestion for fantasy novel that reads at or beyond a graduate school level?
You think Game of Thrones and Malazan Book of the Fallen are for high school??? Dude, just because a book doesn't have "GRE vocabulary" doesn't mean it's for high school! Harry Potter and The Inheritance Cycle, now those are books for high school!

Quit thinking that books need complicated words like expergefaction or honorificabilitudinitatibus for it to be considered an "adult" book. Do you think most adults even know these words? Would anyone buy these books? Wouldn't it be easier to just replace these words with their more common counterparts?

I agree with Lynn; don't mix academic and fantasy writing. If you want adult novels, you're already reading them. If you want even harder novels, try some books by Victor Hugo; they may not be fantasy but they do contain hard words!

When should HBO start casting for Game of Thrones Season 2, and how to Audition?

I'm beyond obsessed with this show, like I am for the books. And I'm dying for an opportunity to audition...but I don't know when they're going to start casting, or how to find where to/who to contact in order to audition.

Anyone know where to look? Who to contact? How to find when they start the auditions?

I'm not looking for any major roles obviously :p though it can't hurt to try anyhow. I've been acting for over 10 years now, even my first two semesters of college I was an acting major...When should HBO start casting for Game of Thrones Season 2, and how to Audition?
Depends on where you live, they shoot this show in Ireland. You should look on:

www.extrasni.com

www.actorsaccess.com

www.northernirelandscreen.co.uk

But mostly they will be going through extras casting companies and agents/agencies for all roles needing an audition all the way down to the horses and equestrians.

i think you'd love Descendant: The Protector by Daniel W. Koch. It's a great book.
If you're okay with uhm 'gore'ishness then there's the Demonata by Darren Shan (the first book in that series is called Lord Loss)

Also, the Saga of Darren Shan by Darren Shan. The first book is called Cirque Du Freak but you can also get the first three in one book as the Vampire Blood Trilogy (there are 12 books altogether but they're very thin [four trilogy's])

There's also, His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman (the first book is Northern Lights but is also known by the American title the Golden Compass)

The Power of Five series by Anthony Horriotwitz is good but it's not complete yet, he's done 4 books in the series so far (the first book is called Raven's Gate)

The Bartimaues Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud (first book - the Amulet Samarkand) is one of my favourites

The Black Magician's Trilogy (the first book is the Magician's Guild) these were also one of my favourites

The Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix, I've only read the first one but Garth Nix is a brilliant writer (the first book is called Sabriel)

The Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage - the first book is called MagykCan anyone give me ideas of a good book to read?

Daenery's. I didn't like her character at the beginning, but as the story progressed I realized that I was rooting for her. Even though she made mistakes, she became a very strong and determined young woman.

I also like Jon Snow. I want something really great to happen to him.

I am working through the books. I read the first book before the show started but the show definitely delivered.Favorite character story line in Game of Thrones?

    BA: Your Favorite Character?

BBA: The Character You Hate The Most?Who Here Loves Game Of Thrones on HBO?
i read all the books a while back and absolutely love them! i have a circle of friends who are mad on the whole thing and we even play the board game occasionally ha ha! (good fun!) i remember when news got round that they were filming the series and we waited in eager anticipation to see if it would deliver, it being such a complex and character driven tale... and i believe it did! the actors they chose were great imo... i especially liked Eddard Stark (Sean Bean) (he's cool in the book anyway) and of course the character of Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage). Jon Snow (Kit Harington) was also pretty cool and i loved Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister. Jaime Lannister ( Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) was good, it'll be interesting to see how his character develops (and boy it does!) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) is ace and very foxy ha ha! and the rest were great as well but those stood out for me.

i look forward to seeing how the characters progress in the future series. i'm keeping an eye on Tyrion, Jaime, Arya, Catelyn and Jon he he ;)

ba: probably Eddard Stark in this first part. an honest down to earth fella and a good father... who sticks to his word and his honour in the face of all kinds of adversity. a great character!

bba: i don't hate any of them ha ha! though 'Littlefinger' deserves a slap :)

    * try to read all the current books before the series continues! believe me this show has been... granted, excellent... but it's also the tip of a very big iceberg... the rest of the story is mindblowingly awesome! i haven't read the latest book yet which came out this year. the whole series is easily one of the best books/novels/stories whatever i've ever read!Who Here Loves Game Of Thrones on HBO?

  • Is Osha from Game of thrones a reoccurring role?

For those that have read the books, does Osha play an important role in the following books? I love the actress that plays her, so i was just curious if it is a minor character or a major one. Either way I love the series and currently ordering the books myself! Is Osha from Game of thrones a reoccurring role?
She is a minor recurring character, but she will be fairly important. She will certainly outlive some major characters. She is still alive in the latest book.

Game of Thrones or The Name of the Wind?

I recently noticed two books at my local Books-A-Million, GoT and NoW. I hear mixed reviews between the two on whether one is better(a term I use loosely). I really enjoy the setting of both novels and know that I will end up reading both, but I would like to know which series to begin reading first. I enjoy fantasy stories, involving kingdoms, armies, guilds, heros, Magic(as a weapon), and conflict(in general). If it helps, I am a fan of TES and really enjoyed The Infernal City, by Greg Keyes.Game of Thrones or The Name of the Wind?
Game of Throne is now a tv show on HBO. It's a for at more for adults, there is a good amount of sex in violence. I hear the books also have a lot of sex. I haven't read name of the wind, or game of thrones.Game of Thrones or The Name of the Wind?
I haven't read either, BUT my son (age 22) and his friends have all read Game of Thrones and get together each week to watch the series. They love it. He's been trying to get me to read it and I will eventually.

Can anyone recommend some good fiction books?

I'm currently reading the book The Magicians by Lev Grossman, and it's AWESOME, but I'm almost finished and need something new to read. I would prefer something set in modern day, nothing too WOW-ish, but still leaning toward fantasy, or even horror. And yes, I have already read the Harry Potters and Dark Towers, and I'm not interested in anything too childish like the Narnia books. I tried to read A Game of Thrones, but that was way too D%26amp;D for my liking, I stopped reading after about 12 pages. Can anyone recommend some good fiction books?

If you like fantasy/horror I would highly recommend Neil Gaiman, especially the Sandman Series. It's a graphic novel series and the main character is Dream (a anthropomorphic personification) and it takes us through Earth, the realm of Dreams, and Hell. It's an amazing series and I would highly recommend it. It starts off more like horror but it moves to fantasy as the series progresses.

Hi, you might want to try my fantasy series, entitled The Tales of Tanglewood, lightly influenced by Irish folklore and Celtic mythology. The first two books in the series are called "The Lon Dubh Whistle" and "The Curse of Satyr Stump"

You can download the first few chapters of each book for free at talesoftanglewood.com

Within the pages of the book, readers will discover Colin, a child who is fully aware of the hidden world of myth and wonder hiding within the woods just beyond his home, long kept secret by old magic. Only the fey magic which runs through his veins has enabled Colin to find what others cannot; the Tanglewood, the 'wood within the woods.

Full of odd characters and creatures of the fey, the Tanglewood is a world of magnificent folklore come to life. As Colin begins to explore the Tanglewood, he will find friendship with the ferrish Ailfrid, the elfin girl Deidre, and Doc Muffingrow, a wise druid.

In the first book, Colin will also find that there is much magic in himself, as well as dangerous enemies who will not let him find solace in the wood so easily. Ailil, King of the Sprites and ruler of The Below, has laid claim to his spirit, and Colin will need the help of his friends and quite a bit of magic to save himself.

You can check out the reviews at Amazon.com and both books are also available on the Amazon Kindle at a low price.
Hmmm... You may like the Sandman Slim series by Richard Kadrey. The first book in the series is Sandman Slim:

When he was 19, James Stark was considered to be one of the greatest natural magicians, a reputation that got him demon-snatched and sent downtown - to Hell - where he survived as a gladiator, a sideshow freak entertaining Satan's fallen angels. That was 11 years ago. Now, the hitman who goes only by Stark has escaped and is back in L.A. Armed with a fortune-telling coin, a black bone knife, and an infernal key, Stark is determined to destroy the magic circle - led by the conniving and powerful Mason Faim - that stole his life.

Though nearly everything has changed, one constant remains: his friend Vidocq, a 200-year-old Frenchman who has been keeping vigil for the young magician's return. But when Stark's first stop saddles him with an abusive talking head that belongs to the first of the circle, a sleazy video store owner named Kasabian, Stark discovers that the road to absolution and revenge is much longer than he counted on, and both Heaven and Hell have their own ideas for his future. . .

    ......

Rob Ryan and Cassie Maddox series by Tana French. The first book in the series is In The Woods:

When he was twelve years old, Adam Ryan went playing in the woods one sunny day with his two best friends. He never saw them again. Their bodies were never found, and Adam himself was discovered with his back pressed against an oak tree and his shoes filled with blood. He had no memory of what had happened. Twenty years later Adam -- now using his middle name of Rob -- is a detective with the Dublin police force. His colleagues don't know about his past. He works as a team with Cassie Maddox, a smart, tough cookie; they are best friends as well as partners. When the body of a young girl is found at the site of an archaeological dig, Rob and Cassie get the case. And when they reach the crime scene, Rob realises it is the exact site of his childhood trauma. They also find a hairclip that he recognises as having belonged to his friend. Game Of Thrones Question?

Was it the witch lady that made Khal Drogo sick when she healed his wound in his fight?

BQ: Have you read the books and if you have is it as good as the tv series or better?Game Of Thrones Question?
The "witch", Mirri Maz Duur, poisoned Khal Drogo as she pretended to heal his chest wound. In the book, it was Daenerys who naively bid Khal Drogo to let Mirri heal him. Mirri had planned to kill Khal Drogo to avenge the pillage and rape of her village, and to kill Daenerys' baby to prevent him from becoming the "Stallion that Mounts (and pillage and rape) the World." So Mirri's intention was good; unfortunately Daenerys became a collateral damage.

The first season stayed very faithful to the book. Most dialogs and lines came straight out of the books. The TV added certain scenes that are not in the book to clarify events and develop characters, and those scenes add to and do not contradict the book. The TV also made certain changes to the book, and most of those changes are fight and battle scenes, mostly for budgetary reasons. IMO, some added/altered fight scenes (like the one between Ned Stark and Jaime Lannister, and how Khal Drogo ripped out his opponent's tongue) are actually better than those in the book. Tyrion's battle was eliminated due to budgetary constraint; in the TV, he was simply knocked out to skip the battle.

The season finale actually covers some early chapters in the second book: Lord Mormont led two hundred rangers beyond the Wall to investigate the wildlings and undead threats, and Yoren disguised Arya as a boy to sneak her out of the city. Those events are in the early part of the second book, but the first season finale move them forward to provide cliffhanger endings for Jon Snow and Arya.Game Of Thrones Question?
She "saved" him, but well... she also took all that matters to him and the Dothraki ppl.

They did the same to her so, it was a little revenge.

I didn't read the books but i think is it!Game Of Thrones Question?
she didn't make him sick or better she made him into a vegetable but don't worry the witch will die soon and no I haven't read any of the books but love the series

Game of Thrones: Wildings to Wildlings?

The people beyond the wall - in the books they were "Wildings," in the TV show they're "Wildlings." Does anyone have any idea why they made that change? Why put that extra "L" in there? Why go from a cool word to an awkward one? Why no outrage from Song of Ice %26amp; Fire fans? It's driving me crazy...Game of Thrones: Wildings to Wildlings?
Its not the only thing they've changed, so far as I know. The finding of the Dire Wolves, how Tyrion is represented etc. But in the end of the day, when has a film/screen-play/t.v. show/serial soap from a book ever stuck true to its source? And why no outrage from the fans? Well, a Dance of Dragons is going to be released this year... after how many years from A Feast for Crows? I bet the fans are either niffed its taken this long for the next in the series to be completed, or they're eagerly anticipating the next installment of the series, rather than mind a directors change or screen writers change to words/places/scenes/dialogue in the t.v. adaptation.Game of Thrones: Wildings to Wildlings?
personally I think wildLings is more natural ala Foundling, yearling etc

That said... is it universally pronounced as wildlings or do only certain people say it that way... ie do the Night's Watch members use one form, while new arrivals to the wall use another

webster has a definition of "wilding" as an Uncultivated plant or a wild animal...

No it will not, there are many characters in game of thrones.............reading and watching helps you to understand the characters deeply.Game of thrones question?
yeah. the series stays true to the books though, so you don't really need to read it (i don't usually say that lol, i always read before watching the movie or show, but that's because most movies nowadays are totally different from the books)Game of thrones question?
No, you just might come to parts in the series that you haven't encountered in the book yet is all.
Game of thrones is awesome. Dont give up watching it.

Best fantasy work of recent history?

Can be anything, movie, book, comic, game...

By recent history, I mean from the last 10-20 years...

    what's your opinion??

    IMO:

    Games:

Final Fantasy 7 (Hands down, this is the best game of recent history)

    Fable (Just... amazing)

    Final Fantasy X (Again, amazing)

    Books:

A Game of Thrones by George Martin

    The Belgariad by David Eddings

    Legend by David Gemmell

    Movies:

The Princess Bride (This barely makes the time limit, but it's still great)

The Dark Knight (Newest of the list, but still very good)

The Nightmare before Christmas (Very Dark but still very enjoyable)

    Anime

Dragonball (Probably the most popular and famous anime EVER)

Bleach (Very complicated in a way, but very good)

Death Note (Dark, but still really good)

    Comics

Watchmen (The Best Comic ever made, hands down)

V for Vendetta (Yes! This is actually a comic!)

Sin City (Yes! This is ALSO a comic!)

What's your opinion??Best fantasy work of recent history?
God of War for the Playstation 3.... WOW

Is George R R Martin overated?

Ok I know the series " Game of Thrones" is seen as one of the popular things on TV, however after reading the authors book series of Song of Ice and Fire which I think the TV shows are based on and I have to say they are diabolical ... I have just started the first book, A Game of Thrones but however it just seems, busy and not very well though out. I plan to carry on for a little while longer because at the moment i have a broke arm and will be off for two weeks from work. And thus have nothing else to do.

what do you think? do you believe he is overrated as an author ? - part of me makes me think, good idea but badly executedIs George R R Martin overated?
mmm... not overrated, but extremely popular. Ex: even LOTR, although epic and one of the first modern fantasy series, is also written kinda meh with more emphasis on language and history.

It could definitely be a smidge better, like the other poster said, Dany started out awesome, but now is dragged down with decadence and political intrigue - which is fine, but it's been dragging.

The series IS thought out, but it's dragged out through the whole series, so if it seems that way in book 1, it IS important and will be revealed in another book.

But as a whole, the series is definitely very epic and very gritty. This series does NOT pull any punches. And does not view magic and fantasy as a "Deus ex Machina".

I always try to convey this series as: War of the Roses/English History x Shakespeare x Fall of the Roman Empire x LOTR, as emphasis is more on political intrigue and alliances than straight up fantasy (until the later books).

If you're looking for fantasy that's clear cut and laid out, this series is not for you. :)

The author tries to convey what fantasy would really be like in real life, as opposed to fairy castles in the sky.

Hope this helps :)Is George R R Martin overated?
Somewhat overrated definately, There are whole long story lines for certain characters that I find to be unintersing, and I think that he could have done a lot more with Dany rather than have her wallow around in the desert for 5 books ignoring her dragons and taking baths all the time.

On the other end, the adventures of Tyrion and Aria are nothing short of awesome.

But, that being said the books are pretty solid fantasy with strong characters and good world building.

If you are looking for a good book try "The Way Of Kings" by robert sanderson. It starts slowly but all the characters are interesting, and when there is magic it is used heavily. Is George R R Martin overated?
Not "overrated," but maybe not your cup of tea.

I don't get the popularity of several current book series, but that is more on a personal then technical level.

Maybe his style does not resonate with you.

    That's all.
I actually felt the same way when I started the series. My husband gave me the first 5 books for my birthday and I was a bit disappointed at first.(and worried that I would only read them because they were a gift that he really put time into choosing).

It seemed a little all over the place and a little too busy.

Having finished 4 of the 5, I grew to love the series. Most of my love for the series came in the 3rd book, so maybe you just need to give it time.

Martin is a fairly accomplished author, both of novels and short stories and TV material. He's been writing since the 70's. I do think he writes as if he fully intends his work to be adapted for the screen and spends far too much time describing clothing. Do I really need to know who's in boiled leather and who's in mail? Once a character is introduced, I can imagine his clothing on a day to day basis without needing to know what he wears from head to toe.

Recommendations for non-hardcore Fantasy/Sci-Fi Books or Series (YA or Adult)?

I'm looking for some new fantasy or sci-fi books, or maybe mystery (preferably series but single books are ok too) to add to my reading list. I'm ok with independent reader/YA level books or adult books (am an adult but enjoy some of the younger people's series). I'm not a hardcore fantasy/sci fi reader but I do enjoy the genre. Generally don't like vampire fare too much, and I do like books referencing mythology or historical figures or post-apocalyptic or dystopian futures/alternative worlds. Here are my feelings about some popular books/series that I've already read which might help with any recommendations. Thanks - I really appreciate any answers!

I LOVED: Harry Potter series, Percy Jackson series, His Dark Materials, Neverwhere and American Gods by Neil Gaiman, The Giver - Lois Lowry, Wrinkle in Time series, Shades of Grey - Jasper Fforde, Phantom Tollbooth, Never Let Me Go - Ishiguro

I REALLY LIKED: Hunger Games Trilogy, The Book Thief, The Westing Game, Thursday Next series, most Hercule Poirot books, Fablehaven series, Sally Lockhart series, Immortal Nicolas Flamel series, Narnia, Abhorsen trilogy, Underland Chronicles, Septimus Heap, Handmaid's Tale, Plot Against America - Roth, Einstein's Dreams, anything by Calvino, Garden Spells - Allen

I HATED (or really disliked): Twilight, Charlie Bone, Mary Higgins Clark stuff, Dark Tower series, DaVinci Code, the later Artemis Fowl books, Jonathan Strange

NOT INTERESTED IN: Eragon, Game of Thrones (tried the first book but it didn't take), Cirque du Freak, Lord of the Rings (already read), Girl with Dragon Tattoo, True Blood books, Inkheart, City of Ember, Ender's Game, Time Travelers Wife, Baroque Cycle, Riverworld, Discworld, Oryx and Crake, Neuromancer, anything by Lem, Dune

ALREADY ON READING LIST: The Passage, The Magicians, Sweetness at Bottom of the Pie, World War ZRecommendations for non-hardcore Fantasy/Sci-Fi Books or Series (YA or Adult)?

Dies the Fire series by SM Stirling. It will appeal to anyone who likes end of the world or alternative history. It has lots of battle scenes.

You might also like anything by Clive CusslerRecommendations for non-hardcore Fantasy/Sci-Fi Books or Series (YA or Adult)?
The Cronus Chronicles by Anne Ursu: there's a reason I recommend that series to everyone.

You've already read all of the other ones I was going to recommend....
You should try The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra ClareRecommendations for non-hardcore Fantasy/Sci-Fi Books or Series (YA or Adult)?
    Just finished Fablehaven! So cool!

Try 100 Cupboards or the Inkheart series.
I would suggest The Maze Runner and The Mortal Instruments.
Try Time for Patriots, a really fun time travel adventure novel published two years ago. It's got all sorts of famous people from the 18th Century in it, some of it is rather funny (some humor is a bit too subtle maybe). Author's name is Thomas Hamilton. 203 pages hardcover, and I heard it is also on Kindle, but I like real books.
So it seems like you have a similar taste in books as my best friend and I have.

I would recommend ANY and ALL of the books from this youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJ_SsqnIt鈥?/a>

Honestly, don't let the titles affect you. We really put off reading Vampire Academy because of the name (being vamp related) but it is now our favorite book EVER.

I think you'd love any of these books. Hope I helped!

Game of Thrones/Like it or hate it? Camelot tv series too?

Do you like it? I love the character who plays the dwarf (Peter Dinklage) I think he is an awesome actor. He deserves to win the award for best actor tv series. It is a little too graphic(sex scenes %26amp; such) for me at times, but I am told the books are also. I love the surprise of killing off main characters. I know next season will be great!

I also loved Camelot TV series, I do hate that they cancelled it.Game of Thrones/Like it or hate it? Camelot tv series too?
I love Game of Thrones and in the last episode season finally when those cute dragons showed up made me really anxious to see what is next. False, buckets of lamenessTrue or False: The new "Game of Thrones" is a super kick @$$ TV show?!?
    I'm sure it's completely asinine.

The game of thrones on HBO?

Does anyone know if the books are like the show and are any good? The game of thrones on HBO?
The show is decently similar to the book(s), meaning that in many instances it sticks quite true to the book(s). Of course, though, there are other instances where the show takes creative liberties, instances where the show leaves out or in some way alters details from the book(s).

If you like the show, I would of course suggest you read the book(s). Overall, I enjoy the show, but I enjoy the book(s) even more. I really do suggest you give the book(s) a try.

    Best wishes!
I'm watching the newest episode right now. Yea it's cool. It's kind of weird though, incest, nudity, killing, homosexuality.... your typical mainstream show for today's standards.

If you ever watched Rome on HBO, I think it's better than that and I liked Rome.

I haven't read the books however, since the show aired they have become New York Times best seller. The game of thrones on HBO?
instead of staring at your computer screen, you should fine out yourself..... I like the show because they are all outstanding actors and it is truer to the plot of the first book than most adaptations are. the first season i think will only be the first book. but honestly, you might end up staring at your screen watching the episodes online hbo is too expensive.
George R.R. Martin has been known as a best-selling author for years so yeah the books are good. The originals are almost always better. Martin's up there with Tolkien and Robert Jordan when it comes to epic fantasy series. The game of thrones on HBO?
The books are great. I haven't seen the show since I can't afford HBO.

When does "A Game of Thrones" start getting good?

I just started The Song of Ice and Fire's first novel A Game of Thrones mainly because of all the great reviews I have seen from it. I am currently on page 69 and I don't know what the heck is going on...Is this normal? When does the novel start to pick up and become entertaining? I'm not like a terrible reader so I'm normally able to understand things in books, but for reason this one is giving me trouble. I know that Robert wants Ned to come down but I just am not understanding this "House" system. Could someone fill me in or just give me some motivation to continue to read? haha thank you! When does "A Game of Thrones" start getting good?
I'm the same. I found reading it so painful that I got the audiobook :)

I'm listening to it now, and I can only say that I'm on chapter 6. It is rather confusing isn't it? I don't like the continuous hopping from one character to another. The only characters I'm really interested right now (and since the beginning) is Jon/Bran. Houses are just families, from what I can tell. Like House Stark is Eddard, Bran and Jon Snow (because he's Eddard (aka Ned's) bastard son). House Lannister is Tyrion and Jaime.

I recommend the audiobook if you find it hard to continue. I prolly would be as lost as you if I hadn't. I know the hunger that you're prolly feeling. "Why is this series so great when I'm so confused?"

Yeah...I really want to finish this before the TV series starts, so I don't plan on giving up.When does "A Game of Thrones" start getting good?
The first book is slightly confusing with the changing view points and huge cast of characters. But don't worry, you'll get to know them and the rest of the series will become easier.

If necessary, take notes. Maybe writing down each house and who's belongs to each one. When does "A Game of Thrones" start getting good?
I want to finish reading the book before the series premiere of Game of Thrones in HBO in April 2011.I am listening to audio book...I agree with all you people that it is very confusing...The only thing that keeps me going is that I read a lot of reviews before starting this book. All those were really positive and tv series is one of the most anticipated in 2011.
I liked them but, like you, I was put off by the beginning and it was not 'till I read it a second time that I fully began to appreciate it... if that makes sense. My advice is to stick it through and finish it.

    What book should I read?

I'm looking for a good book go read. Lately I've been hitched on more realistic books, like Dan Brown, Tolstoy, Game of Thrones etc. I'm a teen so of course I like my kidfiction sorts, like Inheritance Cycle, Meyer, Michael Grant's Gone etc. So I really want to read something mature and realistic. Good theme and such will be plus. :)What book should I read?
Read "Monster" by Frank Peretti if you don't mind being scared by a good novel. It's a little on the long side, but it's really worth it. It's action-packed and full of mystery and excellent characterization.
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseni

Its definitely realistic and one of the most touching, inspiring books i've ever read.

Its about two young boys in Afghanistan who have different religions, one is the others servant. They're best childhood friends, however when one gets raped by a horrible bully of a boy-whom later gets what he deserves in the book (Hassan-servant gets raped)and the other(Amir) does absolutely nothing about it when he is supposed to be his "bestfriend" however he never admits it as the religion and social class completely divides them. As the Taliban grow and war gets worse, amir and his father move away to America...however the memories of his childhood and fail performance of a good friend eat at him and tortures him throughout the book. Many things happen, both funny, sad and absolutely tragic. The storyline is pure and realistic. As it is expresses a different side of Afghanistan-the innoncene of the locals who have to live through hell. Its just a great read, try it out. I love it.

~Forgive me if you've already read it- If you have I hope people who havn't see this and they'll read it:)))))))What book should I read?
Try Nokosee: Rise of the New Seminole (http://bit.ly/Nokosee) and its sequel Nokosee %26amp; Stormy (http://amzn.to/fqOoph). Although both are written from a 17-year-old girl's POV, guys will like it because of its plausible combat and survival sequences. Basically it's a coming-of-age tale with lots of action, adventure and romance layered over a twisted save-the-environment plea.

Vision Quest by Terry Davis. High school wrestling and women. Great movie but greater book.

    http://bit.ly/VisionQuest

The Basketball Diaries by Jim Carroll. A horrifying and hilarious account of "growing up hip" in NYC while a high school basketball star and drug addict. http://www.amazon.com/Basketball-Diaries鈥?/a>

Cherry by Mary Karr. A memoir about teens, sex, drugs and growing up in rural Texas as told through the gritty, beautiful prose of one of America's best writers having taught at Harvard and currently teaching as the Peck Professor of English Literature at Syracuse University. It's a book every teen girl should read. If the opening paragraph doesn't do it for you, nothing will (you can read it on the Amazon link below). I've also supplied you a link to her Harper Collins website where you can see the author describe her life in a revealing teaser for her new book "Lit."

The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides. A moving story inspired by true events about the suicides of five teenage sisters as told from the viewpoint (for the most part) of randy teenage boys who try to explain it all.

    http://amzn.to/dwrVklVirgin

Think of this as Greek mythology lite (less gods, more filling): The King Must Die by Mary Renault. Set in ancient Greece it follows Theseus on a journey of discovery while painting a vivid picture of the times. Loved the descriptions of young uninhibited Greeks running buck naked up hills and through forests and making love among the flowers. The scenes of naked teens jumping bulls with back flips cries out for a cinematic interpretation. Ms. Renault's written a series of historical novels set in this period and all of them are so worthy.

    http://bit.ly/MaryRenault
Forever by Pete Hammill isn't exactly realistic, but it is very realistically written. Or anything by Hammill really.

The Kite Runner by Khaled Housseini (no idea how to spell his name and not looking it up cause I'm on my phone, but excellent book and author)

Steve Berry + Michael ChrichtonWhat book should I read?
ok so you like game of thrones, right? have you read the Knights of the Round Table?? Like the real version... im a teen too and it may be hard to read and its kinda fictional but the idea of it is similar to game of thrones... so ya:)
Well U have actually read many good books just try something new but don't go for magazines and comics rather they make u dumb try some novels like The secret this book is awesome and it is made for some matures teens and adults...............
Well heres a book I'm currently reading and its pretty awesome so far its call The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
If you like historical fiction, you'll like The Fall of Giants, by Ken Follett. It's based on World War I.

The boy's name must begin with either A, V, or R, and his middle name is from Greek or Roman myth. The first girl's name must begin with D and her middle name must be a nature name. Your youngest daughter's name ends in -ella or -elle, and her middle name is the same as a character from a book you love.

? The Wolf: You will have a large, tight-knit family, but married for duty rather than love. Your spouse is someone that you slowly grow from friends to being in love with. You have five children: three sons and two daughters. Your firstborn son's first name is the name of one of your friends (or idols if you have no male friends), and his middle name is classic. Your oldest daughter's name is very feminine and ends in A, her middle name is your first name. The younger girl's name is four letters long, and her middle name is anything you like. Your second boy is named after either your father or brother, and his middle name is something very popular right now. Your youngest son is named after a grandfather or a relative farther back in the tree, and his MN begins with E.

? The Lion: You marry for political reasons, and while you never seem to get along with your spouse, you find happiness in your children, of which you have three, two sons and a daughter who is your little princess. Your eldest son has a classic name that has been spelled differently (ex William -%26gt; Wylliam), and his middle name is your favorite boy name. Your daughter's name is the name of a queen, and her middle name is your favorite girl name. Your younger son's name is Irish and his middle name is Biblical.

The UK paperback edition was split in half, Part 1 being published as Steel and Snow in June 2001 (with the one-volume cover) and Part 2 as Blood and Gold in August 2001 (with a specially-commissioned new cover). In France, the decision was made to cut the novel into four separate editions.

Song of Ice & Fire Fans: How do you like Game of Thrones so far?

I read the first book years ago (and have forgot much of the plot), so I'm re-reading the books. I'm also watching the series and find the production very well done and engrossing.

What do you think of the TV series? Even though GRRM is working closely with HBO production, do you feel it's stayed true to the books, or the essence of the books? :)Song of Ice %26amp; Fire Fans: How do you like Game of Thrones so far?
I freakin' love it. Except there's one thing that I think sort of streamlines the plot, having read the books.

The villains (we know who they are) are so blatantly obvious, they actually give it away during new dialogue scenes. I liked how you were never sure of a person's intentions before... but now that's not the case.

Oh well, I still think its one of the best TV shows I've ever seen!Song of Ice %26amp; Fire Fans: How do you like Game of Thrones so far?
As a fan of the books (not die hard fan or anything of that nature) I would like to see the series on TV however I don't have Sky or know any descent websites to watch it on. Although I have seen some of the characters and some scenes on the HBO website, have to say Joffrey Baratheon has the most punchable face ever, which is mint character casting.

A college who I work with at me local retail stores says little things have been changed through the show, he said how when the dire wolves are first found the antler from the stag isn't in its throat, but it looks like the stag killed the dire wolf in some off-screen fight scene (and in turn was killed in the melee.)

He said there's small changes to Tyrion in some scenes, and also Sandor Clegane's appearance (the burnt face that he has). If I could get a hold of the series i'd probably make more comments on it than hearing it from hearsay.Song of Ice %26amp; Fire Fans: How do you like Game of Thrones so far?
I'm coming at it from the other end - I'm enjoying the series having never read the books - so I've just gone out and bought the first one :)

I've never yet enjoyed a TV series and _not_ the books it was based on, so I have high hopes for it.

Need help finding good sci-fi/fantasy book to read?

i am looking for a book that isnt drowning with unneeded description that slows the pace. I want a decent paced book with good/well rounded character, some action, and maybe a bit of romance (but not too much that makes it all cheesy). also if it isnt too much to ask i want a book without the cliched elves, dwarves, trolls, dragons things. i like original and innovative ideas. Please dont list any of the typical books like harry potter or game of thrones or starwars or lord of the rings or things like that cuz ive seen all that. i just need something fresh to read. It doesnt matter if its adult or teen. thnx. sorry if im being picky, im just sick of looking for a book to read and only finding crap. (not that the books i listed are by any means crap)Need help finding good sci-fi/fantasy book to read?
Ursula LeGuin is a fantastic writer. My favorite books by her:

The Dispossessed - two planets are out of communication w/ one another due to political differences. One planet sends an envoy to the other after a 100 year silence. The differences between the two societies are what drives this fascinating book.

The Left Hand of Darkness - on the planet Winter everyone is ambisexual - both male and female. An envoy (she likes her envoys, that Ursula) comes to perform a scientific quest. The relationship he forges with his partner is quite profound. In this book is the wonderful phrase, "The King is pregnant"

The Earthsea Trilogy - yes, it has dragons in it. But these are very well-crafted stories. Very worthwhile.

The Word for World is Forest - this slim book is one of my favorite books by UlG. It is a fable about slavery and imperialism. Very fast action.

Philip K. Dick has written some amazing books. I would recommend UBIK - hard to describe, but a great ripping yarn. I also really loved The Divine Invasion, but you sort of need a certain amount of Christian theology to understand the sequence of events. (Dick was NOT a Christian apologist, such as CS Lewis)

More in the lines of fantasy are books by Tim Powers. The first of his I read was The Anubis Gates and that remains my favorite. A man travels back in time to attend a lecture by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He gets left behind by the other time travelers, and has to find his way back. A GREAT BOOK! Earlier this summer I read On Stranger Tides, which is a pirate story with zombies. Sounds stupid, but it is a REALLY GREAT READ! It had my heart pounding throughout most of the book. I think it's out of print, but they probably have it t the library.

Sort of in this same vein is Geek Love. A very disturbing book, but also very funny, and extremely well-written. Much more 'adult' than anything like Eragon.

I am a purist when it comes to fantasy. I like going to the source. In my mind, no one wrote better contemporary fantasy than E. Nesbitt. She wrote around the turn of the alst century, but her stories are still really great reads. She has a great sense of humor, and her stories are free of any sort of clunkily obvious morality that cluttered up so much kids' lit in the Victorian Age. I'd start with The Story of the Amulet and go from there.

A very beautiful and haunting book is Beauty by Robin McKinley. A telling of Beauty and the Beast that is simply wonderful.

I also recommend The Mists of Avalon: the story of the women in King Arthur's court. I would heartily recommend reading this followed by The Once and Future King by TH White. Mostly the same tale, one from a feminist perspective (Mists) and one from the patriarchal (King)

If you want a fast, easy, fun and very bizarre read, try Borgel by Daniel Pinkwater. I read my first Pinkwater when I was in my mid 30s; Borgel was the first. I went out and read everything I could find by him.

Yet another vein if sci fi is Kurt Vonnegut. But a very different sort of sci fi. He wrote with his tongue in his cheek, using sci fi elements to better describe life on earth. Slaughterhouse Five is one great classic. I'd also recommend The Sirens of Titan and Galapagos.

And one more recommendation, a book that has haunted me through my life ever since I first read it in my late teen years: In Watermelon Sugar by Richard Brautigan. A very odd, very beautiful, very lyrical book about a town called iDeath and its heroes and villains. Every day the sun shines a different color; the watermelons they grow on that day are the color the sun shines. The black, soundless watermelons grow when the sun is black, and their juice is the sweetest.

Hope some of these work for you.
Golden Compass, The giver, Brave New WorldNeed help finding good sci-fi/fantasy book to read?
Twilight and New Moon by Stephenie Meyer its a Romance with a Bite...
Eragon. sorry if it has too much elves, dragons, etc. It makes up for it with Urgals and other new stuff.Need help finding good sci-fi/fantasy book to read?
The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde. Thursday Next is an agent for Jurisfiction. (First Edition books have to be protected from people that want to change the books so she tries to stop the bad guy from doing this.) She can talk to characters in the book of Jane Eyre.
Dean Koontz, read the Watcher first.
The Inheritence trilogy. I know the third book isn't out yet, but they are really good so far. I don't really like books with elves and stuff like that in them, but this really drew me in. I spent several hours just reading these books. They do have elves and dragons and the like in them, but they are very well written and original. The third book is due out sometime in summer of '08, so there is plenty of time to get around to read them. These are some of my favorites, maybe you'll enjoy them as much as me.
How about the Rowan series by Anne McAffrey, Ill Wind by Kevin J. Anderson, X-Files:Antibodies by Kevin J. Anderson, Prey by Michael Chrighton, Cell by Stephen King, or A Very Strange Trip by L. Ron Hubbard? I would say the Stand by Stephen King but even he alleges diarrhea of the word processor for that story.
I'm sorry but I didn't see anything against witch craft. I read my first book by this writer back in the seventies. It may be hard to find but get a book called Black Company by Glen Cook, there are I think nine novels. The back ground of the story is the company has a history of a thousand years but not the members, as they die new people join. The main character is a doctor call Croaker. Check it out and tell me what you think.
If you want original and innovative, I have two authors for your consideration.

    1) Glen Cook - The Garrett series. These funky little paperbacks were out of print and so hot that a dog-eared copy of one of the early ones used to go for 40 bucks or more. They are now reprinted. This is a combination of 40's style detective noir fiction with the elves, dwarves, trolls etc tossed into the mix. They are hilariously funny and totally unique. Glen Cook has written many books, but the Garrett ones are the ones with the titles that include the names of various metals - gold, silver, tin, lead. He has a website. He is a very original author and a great read. My favorite Garrett quote - "Beer is my favorite food and redheads are my favorite sport." Woah.

    http://www.xmission.com/~shpshftr/GC/GC-鈥?/a>

    2) Christopher Moore - Kind of a newcomer on the scene - been around a few years. His vampire books You Suck and Bloodsucking Fiends are hilarious. Lamb, the story of Jesus as told by his best friend Biff is so funny I actually laughed out loud on the train reading it. He, too, has a website.

    http://www.chrismoore.com/

Skip the Eragon and Twilight and Harry Potter stuff. If you are seeking true originals that aren't cliches, these are your authors. They are fresh and edgy and great reads. You are my kind of reader. You will love these. Read about them.

    Pax - C
Try Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, or a collection of Ray Bradbury's short stories. They both meet the criteria you've have listed.
I'll throw some titles out for ya.

1st I will support some previous answers. The Eyre Affair was excellent. Stephen King is always a good read. I recommend Eyes of the Dragon, The Regulators, and It.

    Now some other recommendations:

Anything by Terry Pratchett. I love is view on the world.

Good Omens by Pratchett and Gaiman

Neverwhere %26amp; American Gods by Neil Gaiman

Speed of Dark by Elizabeth Moon

The Death Gate Cycle by Hickman %26amp; Weis

Or go to a Half-Price Books (used book store) and look at the SciFi section. Try one or two. They usually cost about $1-2. Have fun.
Nora Roberts the romance writer also writes under J.D. Robb. In the series set in the future she is a kick butt detective married to the richest man in the world. She is tough and sometimes funny. All of the characters in her books are memorable. She has written a bunch so if you like her there are more out there.
Find one by Frederik Pohl. Try "The Case Against Tomorrow" or "Platinum Pohl" for a start.

    HF Pohl
All of the books by David Baldacci are really good. Try The Hour Game.
dark dominion by bentley little was a great book, got what you want
you've had some great suggestions here. pasdeberet especially.

ignore the people who say that this or that fantasy with dragons and elves is really innovative. eragon especially is a piece o' crap.

china mieville is one of the most innovative fantasy writers right now. his books drown a bit in unneeded words, but it's not all description and it's pretty fresh language. i'd recommend you try his YA book "un lun dun" or his first novel "king rat" first. these two are less wordy, and there are no dragons, swords, elves, dwarves or true prophecies.

i second the person who recommended ursula k. leguin and the novels that person recommended. she's amazing.

you should also pay attention to the two SF writers who have been given macarthur "genius" grants--who just happen to be my two favorites as well: octavia butler and jonathan lethem.

octavia butler deals with race-mixing and dominant/subservient relationships in ways that can be truly devastating. her prose is exactly what you want: clear, direct, expressive. try "parable of the sower" or "kindred".

jonathan lethem's first four novels were SF. he's moved on to lit fic stardom and only brushes against the genre now. his books are a little heady, but still fun, and his writing is top notch. try "gun, with occasional music" which is a sci-fi noir, or "girl in landscape" which is a sci-fi western.
    the Skinner, by Neal Asher

Robert E. Howard's Bran Mak Morn or Conan stories

Under the Moons of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs

    Little Fuzzy by H.Beam Piper
I suggest reading books by Issac Asimov, Lemony Snicket and ...
    Want something different? Try these:

The Sharing Knife, by Lois McMaster Bujold

Dragon and Thief, by Timothy Zahn

Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment, by James Patterson

Dead Witch Walking, by Kim Harrison

Daughter of the Empire, by Raymond Feist %26amp; Janny Wurts

The Tar-Aiym Krang, by Alan Dean Foster

I've read over 700 sf/f books. These have great characters, action, and a little romance, and most definitely are original and innovative and fresh, even the last two, written a while ago. They each also have the added advantage of being the first book in a series, so if you like what you've read, there's more. Enjoy!
    David B. Coe-The LonTobyn Chronicles

    1) The Children of Amarid

    2) The Outlanders

    3) Eagle-Sage

    Winds of the Forelands:

    1) Rules of Ascension

    2) Seeds of Betrayal

    3) Bonds of Vengence

    4) Shapers of Darkness

    5) Weavers of War

    Ted Dekker

    Red

    White

    Black
Try Tamora Pierce books:Song of the Lioness quartet etc.

Garth Nix - Sabriel, Lariel and Abhorsen etc.
Try Elantris by Brandon Sanderson. I think it's almost exactly what you're looking for. I'm including the amazon link if you want to find out more about it.
Well..maybe I will be accused of banality... but I would say

    1. Abarat, by Clive Barker ( only books I and II have been published)

    2. The Dark Tower series by Stephen King!

  • True villains of Game of Thrones? ?

(Warning - potential spoilers below) By way of reference, I am about halfway through book 5 (you may not want to continue if you haven't gotten through book 3). I have my own ideas, but I am wondering who other people think might fall into the villain category - i.e., there is no redeeming value to these people at all. It seems that many of the people that you would have loved to see get what's coming to them in the first books (certain members of the Lanister clan or a former ward), many have either changed, gotten what was coming to them, or their motivations make them seem less villainous. That being said my vote for villains that have remained true to my first blush opinion are: the Freys and the Boltons. I think you might also be able to throw Qyburn and the slave holding cities in estros into the mix as well. Beyond these guys, you may not like a number of people, but they might not be completely "evil". Any opinions? (Try to note spoilers in responses, thanks)True villains of Game of Thrones? ?
Cersei. From the beginning, I always hated Cersei, and she is definitely one of the bad guys. (I'm nearly finished with AFFC at the moment, so that's where I'm getting my opinions from).
I think I agree with you with the Freys. And, so far, Melisandre. I might be proven wrong there though, I don't know yet.

Edit in response to the below post : You know, I completely forgot about Littlefinger and Varis. I don't know *what* to make of them, but Littlefinger especially has always struck me as the "Evil Puppet-master" type.True villains of Game of Thrones? ?
I'm almost done with Dance with Dragons :)

    * Cersei - I agree with the previous poster. I have always hated her, she's spoiled, narcissistic, uncaring of others or the realm, and unredeemable. She's the reason why Joffrey (as much as I HATE him) is psycho.

    * Baelish/Littlefinger - He's manipulated half of everything behind the scenes. He's uber sneaky and out for #1.

    * Varys/The Spider - Same as Baelish. He claims he's doing everything for the Realm, but I wonder.

    * I also agree with you in regards to the Boltons and Freys. I was SO MAD when I read about the Red Wedding. I'm tempted to make my own t-shirt that says "F--- the Freys". *^%26amp;*^*

And the father and son Boltons are both sick b-strds.

I'm on the fence with Melisandre, she's definitely not absolutely good, but I'm waiting to see if she redeems herself.

Game of Thrones beginning story questions?

Please don't spoil anything! I am on page 38 right now.

    1) Is Garen the man who was executed by Eddard?

    2) Is the fact that Jon got an albino direwolf and Greyjoy said that they die faster in any way significant to the plot? Please just a yes or no answer. But if it's not that direct of an answer then you can elaborate but no spoilers please!

    3) What is the connection between the Starks and the Tullys and Targaryn(sp)?

I know you are going to say all the answers are going to come as I read the book but the world is so big and there are so many characters introduced in the beginning that I need some questions answered.

Thank You!!!Game of Thrones beginning story questions?
    1) Yes.

    2) It's significant, but not in the way Greyjoy implies. The albino dies soonest usually because it is set out from the rest of the pack, not because of any actual weakness.

    3) This is VERY complicated. Stark and Tully is easy enough. Eddard Stark's older brother was betrothed to Katelyn Tully but died, so Eddard married her in his place. The Targaryens is a major element of the series history. What happened was Eddard's little sister Lyanna was kidnapped by Rhaegar Targaryen. This was the trigger that caused the Baratheons to lead an uprising and overthrow of the Targaryen line.

How many chapters does a game of thrones have? George R. R. Martin.?

For christmas, that is one of the things that I'm going to get. Well, I'm getting the box set of the Fire and Ice serise(books 1-4). Also, are they lengthy books? All of them too. Not like Percy Jackson and the Olympians where book one was a decent size with small text, while book two was alot smaller with noticably larger text.(They were still great books though, all of them). I'm hoping that they are as long as the Harry Potter books, or at least close. They probably are not, but you never know. To sum it all up, all I want to know is about how many chapters each book is, whether or not they are all long, and if you reccomend them. The answer that answers the most questions gets the "Best Answer". If multiple answers answer my question, the best written one gets the best answer. How many chapters does a game of thrones have? George R. R. Martin.?
They are very lengthy books, increasingly so as they go along (the last two books he did, were meant to be one book, but he realized he was only half done and had 800+pages so he cut the book into two separate ones). I just reread the first book last weekend, and it had about 730pages plus an apendix-753pages total. Not sure the amount of chapters, as they aren't numbered (he uses the character names as chapter markers 'Bran' for a Bran centric chapter, Tyrion, Ayra, etc). Book two is...836pages, and I haven't read the others yet but they are around abouts the same length.

They are longer, wordier, in more indepth then HP books, the world is massive, cultures and characters numerous and well designed-can be confusing to some. If you like in depth, well written novels, with a massive world and can keep track of dozens of characters and minor plots instead of one or two big plots and two or three main characters, then it is a great read. I know a few people that won't read it, because there is to much 'boring description and background shite'.

Also, be aware there are 3 little mini novels that take place about 90years before the main series-not horribly important or anything, but worth a read if you have time. How many chapters does a game of thrones have? George R. R. Martin.?
The first 2 of the three mini novels are Hedge Knight, and Sworn Sword, the series is Tale of Dunk and Egg. There will be seven novels in the main series, going by what I last heard. A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast For Crows, %26amp; A Dance with Dragons are out now.

Game of Thrones premiere, what did y'all think?

I haven't read the 1st book in over year, so I don't remember everything. It seemed pretty faithful to the work, although the narration was. They also raised the children's ages (Bran mentioned to be 10, not 8, Sansa 13 instead of 11) which I must say will be a welcome change from the book. I appreciate them inserting a map into the credits, I hope they adjust the grpahics overtime as other areas like Harrenhal and Vaes Dothrak replace Winterful and Pentos in importance. I thought Jaime's, Ned's, Arya's actors did a good job especially...Game of Thrones premiere, what did y'all think?
Overall, I liked it. I thought it was well done. I liked the acting and I loved the visuals and the sets. My complaints are minor, really.

    1. The Dany/Drogo wedding night scene was wrong. I thought in the books that it was very pivotal for them. Didn't like how it was portrayed.

    2. We see Theon Greyjoy but they don't introduce him or explain why he is there. And he didn't kick the head. He should have kicked the head because that was an early indicator for his character.

    3. Don't mind the aging of the characters or some of the additional dialogue. Tyrion's lechery is a bit overstated and his sheer cleverness is understated. Hoping that changes as things move on.

    4. Should have been a little more in the crypts with dialogue explaining Lyanna and Rhaegar.

    5. I didn't like Cat geting a letter directly from Lysa. I liked the hidden, encoded message in the box. Sending a letter directly would have been way too risky.

Overall, as a longtime fan of the series, I am very pleased thus far. Looking forward to the next nine Sundays.Game of Thrones premiere, what did y'all think?
Im watching now like a half hour in. Seems pretty awesome. One of the best openings to a show I've seen in a long time with the night patrolGame of Thrones premiere, what did y'all think?
    ya they are well intertesting

Can someone please explain Game of thrones?

ok so i watched the first season on HBO, and I`m half-way reading through the first book ''song of ice and fire''. All chapters are named after a member from the starks family, including tyrion, but where's Robb?? please don't spoil what happens in the next books, if there's a chapter in the next book named after robb, please tell me and why it is set up like this??

When Ned was at King's landing, in the book where catelyn's chapter is in the middle of two Eddard chapters. The first one ends with Petry (lord baelish) telling ned to come visit the brothel and that he won't tell catelyn if he sleeps with one of his girls. In the next chapter it just explains how he's coming out of there wtf??? did he actually sleep with one of the whores??? i don't understand i thought the whole book was about Ned being faithful to catelyn and how he learned his lesson since he took Jon under his household. The author made it clear that Ned felt bad and would never do that again, why would he sleep with a whore???? and i'm pretty sure Jon snow's mother wasn't a whore from what i know. Plus in the book Ned figures out Joeffrey's secret and how Jon arryn was killed for knowing it, why would he repeat the same mistake as the previous hand?? it doesn't make sense to me it just seems like the author needed an excuse just to set up a war between the lannisters and the starks.....The author talks about how Ned fault all these wars and how smart he is, especially how he advises the King, so why would he make a stupid mistake like that?? it just feels like the character is not stable, is it just me or did the author mess up there somewhere...Can someone please explain Game of thrones?
Just to add to what Kelley said, and to shed light on your question why did Ned make the same mistake as Jon Arryn well, they are both similar in characteristics in the fact that they're too loyal too 'wholesome' almost to do anything about it. What Ned did was confront Cersei and basically oust her that way instead of rounding her up and the Lannisters in the first place and holding them under due arrest after Robert Baratheon was killed by the boar.

In parts it was Ned's fault why the war started, but if you look at it again its more a Lannister doing than anything else. Gregor Clegane attacks holdfasts near Riverrun (I think its Riverrun) or territories outside of Casterly Rock. This makes Ned react, being a 'wholesome' good guy (and also being the hand) he sends Beric Dondarrion to arrest Gregor, further alienating his allies at Kings Landing. With Beric gone, plus the Baratheon brothers leaving Kings Landing on Roberts death it leaves Ned with few allies and practical out foxed by Cersei to do anything other than give in.

Cersei was too clever, too conniving and too manipulative and she out moved both Ned and Jon before each of them could do anything about it.Can someone please explain Game of thrones?
Some men claim to stay faithful but they repeat the mistake. And some men see whores as something closer to animals, that sex with them doesn't count as cheating. Can someone please explain Game of thrones?
The series is called A Song of Ice and Fire. The first title in the series is A Game of Thrones. If the next season will be A Clash of Kings, after the title of the next book, I don't know.

Robb doesn't have a chapter with his name attached because he's not an integral part of the story in the first book.

Petyr was teasing Ned by saying he wouldn't tell Catelyn if he took a whore. Ned had no intention of sleeping with a whore, he went there to talk to the whore who was the mother of King Robert's newest bastard. The first part of that chapter, Ned is in the common room with Petyr, pulling on his gloves and saying his business here is done. But the chapter goes on to explain exactly what Ned's business was with the whore.

Jon Arryn was Ned's brother-in-law. Ned wanted to know why Arryn had been murdered. He had no fear that knowing the big secret would cause his death. The story is also about loyalty and honor which Eddard Stark has in great supply. He's not going to be afraid for his life if he goes poking into the same things Jon Arryn poked into. I don't think for a minute that it was just a convenient way to set the stage for war. War with the Targaryen was inevitable after Robert took the Seven Kingdoms in the same way the war is inevitable when there are power hungry families all trying to rule.

  • A Game of Thrones - Everything you expected?

Sky Atlantic's new show based on George R.R. Martin's masterpiece.

I read the first novel but then got sidetracked by Brent Weeks, so I figured I'd recap with the TV series before carrying on with the books.

How has the show held up to the book for everyones expectations? I have to say I was impressed with the first episodes, but I think it's starting to lose its pull a little now.

Though the death of Viserys last Monday was suitably brutal, and I thought they would've toned it down a little but I wasn't disappointed. I enjoyed watching the spineless monsters death as much as I remember enjoying reading it.

Also the snide Cersei absolutely lived up to my interpretation of her in the book. The whole Lannister trio are entertaining, in fact, and very well acted. And Baratheon makes me laugh as he did in the book - the jolly fat king shadowed by his heroic past.

But what could've made it better? Because I can't help but feel that the show has let the book down a little...A Game of Thrones - Everything you expected?
Of course it's a let down from the books. If HBO did a truly faithful adaptation, there would be about 20+ episodes. It has been a very good adaptation, in fact, probably the best adaptation of a novel to the screen that I've seen. But things have been added to help the story flow better, some characters have been changed or combined with other characters. Stories have been simplified.

I'm impressed so far and I don't think it's losing steam, by any stretch. The best parts are still ahead!A Game of Thrones - Everything you expected?
To be honest I'm happy with the show. Maybe the only thing that bothers me Is it ending so quickly, 1 hour per week isn't enough.

Fantasy Book lovers, what makes a good villain in your opinion?

For me i love the villains that are manipulative like Littlefinger in game of thrones and as well the characters like Loki in the film Thor, they just seem to be such a great villain.Fantasy Book lovers, what makes a good villain in your opinion?
Villains that are working toward the greater good.

    Like Magneto in X-men.
I've never been able to digest the idea of a villian who is inherently and irremediably evil. All my antagonists have morally ambiguous personalities - they never do things out of pure malice.

So, in my opinion a good villian would be someone who can commit unimaginable atrocities but at the same time provides a strong moral basis for them - not something along the lines of making himself immortal or world domination, but a more relatable cause, perhaps a tortured past etc.Fantasy Book lovers, what makes a good villain in your opinion?
really good question! Um ... i have to think on this one... to me, a good villain is one who has a personality that REALLY stands out, and makes him/her who they are. Ex: Voldemort. he's so unique, and i just want to know more and more about him. :] Not a normal typical "bad" person.
that they are somewhat interesting and are more than just a villain as Mur Laferty says some times you just have to ask yourself "What would Magneto do?"Fantasy Book lovers, what makes a good villain in your opinion?
    one with a big penis
