Is the game of thrones book like the TV show?

I've been watching A game of thrones these past 3 weeks and am really enjoying the show so i decided to buy the first 2 books from a site. Now they're on the way but I was thinking if it was a good idea to buy the books and it might ruin one or the other. Has anyone read the books and been watching the tv show and can comment on if the show is bad because you read the books or vise versa? Is the game of thrones book like the TV show?
I have read all the books in the series, excluding A Dance with Dragons. This is why I found the show a bit repetitive. If I had to choose between books and the TV series would prefer the books, is sure.Is the game of thrones book like the TV show?
Tough call. I think it depends on your preferences. Would you rather the exciting moments surprise you while reading a book, or on TV?

The series so far has been very close to the books. It's a faithful adaptation. A few things have been added, other things removed, but for the most part, they are keeping true to the story.

I've read the books years ago but if I were watching for the first time, I'd be telling myself that I wouldn't read the books until after the first season... while I was on the way to the bookstore.

Whichever you decide,my best advice is to enjoy this journey. It's a lot of fun. And whatever you do, stay away from the spoilers! Is the game of thrones book like the TV show?
from what I understand the TV series is as faithful as can be expected -- budget limits and CGI Matching constraints etc make for alterations...

the biggest complaint I've read is that the 'wedding night' scene with Khal Drogo and Daenerys (sp?) was more 'rape-y on TV while the book was more 'romantic'
