Please, for the love of all that is good right and blessed in your world, tell me you are either 12 or special needs (I'll feel exponentially better if you're both)
the Book series has been around since the late 1990's and GRRM began writing them probably a decade before that, with the express intent of writing books that could not, should not, would not be adapted to another medium such as television
in 2009 HBO approached him with the idea to option the first book as a series which aired in 2011
the 5th book of a now planned 7 reached book stores about a month or 2 after the series finished airing... and a second season is in production to air in 2012 (the 6th book is still being written (last interview he's maybe 1/7th of teh way through)
so tell me... with over ten years and 4 books past before the series was a twinkle in some one's eye how in the Blue hello can you even ask which came first? seriously?
A Game of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fire: Book One (Random House Movie Tie-In Books) George R.R. Martin makes a huge breakthrough with this well written, immediately engrossing, and incredibly intricate tale that keeps you hooked all the way through. Martin steps out on a limb as he writes a fantasy novel whose "good" characters are not invincible and sometimes bad things can and do happen. Most fantasy I've read involves the main characters in impossible situations that resolve themselves by dumb luck or the characters own super-human abilities. Martin goes above and beyond and writes a story that allows for inexperience in a characters fighting ability, both on the battle field and in the political arena. The protagonist does not always make the right decisions, and the good guy doesn't always win.
bWhich came out in the "A Game of Thrones" series the books or the TV show?
A Game of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fire: Book One by George R.R. Martin is somewhat patterned on the War of the Roses does not detract from the richness of the world Mr. Martin has created. And this world is not defined by drawn-out, detailed descriptions and charts, but by the clarity of the prose. In fact, the genealogies and characteristics of the great houses are spelled out so well in the story that the appendix at the end is almost superfluous.

Book predates the HBO series. The series is very well done, deservedly popular, but the book is a far richer and more detailed experience.
If you like the show, try the first book of the series which shares the same name. It's out in paperback and is at libraries, too, so you needn't invest much except your time.
I'm not a fantasy reader, but I really liked the books.Which came out in the "A Game of Thrones" series the books or the TV show?
Of course the tv show is based on the book. I haven't seen the tv show, but I can count the number of movies which were better than the book on one hand and that includes Killdozer.
The show is based on books. The books are very much worth getting! I loved them and they are a bit more detailed than the show so lots more happens. Its much better in the books.
