Is the book series "The Game of Thrones" as enjoyable as the HBO series?

I am truly enjoying the HBO series "Game of Thrones" on HBO and I am considering ordering the set of books by George Martin. I would like to hear from someone who has read the books as well as watching the HBO series. Are the books as good as the HBO presentation? Are the characters and plot true to the book?Is the book series "The Game of Thrones" as enjoyable as the HBO series?
My son has read the series and loves the HBO version. Worth reading! Is the book series "The Game of Thrones" as enjoyable as the HBO series?
I don't have HBO, so like your first reply, I can't really compare the two. But the book series is fantastic.

I'm not a fantasy fan, but both our kids (then older teens) nagged and nagged and nagged me to read it. When the last one went to college, he left his copy at home, right where I'd see it, so I did. I liked it so much I read the series, and later bought them in hardcover.

I hear the TV series is excellent, but it would take hundreds of hours of programming to cover all the content of the books. If you're not sure whether you want to read them, get the first one from the library, or buy it used in paperback, so you'll have invested little or nothing.

I bet you end up reading them all.Is the book series "The Game of Thrones" as enjoyable as the HBO series?
I am sorry that I cannot answer your question concerning the series itself as I have never seen it, but I am an avid fan of the books. They are the best of the best in epic fantasy. I only just recently learned that Westeros has been televised and would be interested in seeing it. George RR Martin does not spare his characters, and it would be great to see how the producers handled the Red Wedding.
In a word: yes. I was very excited about the show, so before it aired I got the first book and really enjoyed it, I'm now reading the second book, and plan to read the whole series. The show is, for the most part, extremely faithful to the book and very enjoyable to watch.
