An epic fantasy book series . . . without magic?

And when I say magic, I mean TOO MUCH magic. For instance, I spent a LOT of hours reading A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin, an entertaining enough book, but there's just so much dark magic and strange things (I won't spoil them, though) . . . and it just kind of ruined the mood for me.



See, I liked the book, it was a little slow, but I liked it, I just hated all the magic and undead stuff that was going on in the background. Because besides that, it transported me to a medieval, somewhat realistic world, which is great! Of course, I don't mind suspending my belief, but still, a little more grounded realism is helpful.



I was thinking about reading the Malazan Book of the Fallen series, because that sounds pretty awesome, but I'm not sure because there is supposed to be some magic in there . . . and I don't mind a little magic, as long as it's not extremely dark and strange with undead beings being risen from the ashes and such. That's just too much for me.



So, do you guys know of any epic fantasy book series with little to no magic? And do you know if those Malazan Book of the Fallen novels have a lot of magic?

The Dragon Riders of Pern, by Anne McCaffrey. This series was recently taken over by her son Todd. Fire breathing dragons, no magic.

Lord of the Rings.

I love the series because magic does not play a deciding role in the books. What I mean is, the outcome wasn't decided based on spells and magic, it was true grit and dedication. A truly riveting novel.
