How to install new harddrive for Dell Inspiron 6000?

My Inspiron 6000 laptop harddrive is damaged. I've already given up the data for lost, and am going to purchase a compatible replacement HDD and re-install XP MCE 05. However, I've read that Dell partitions its harddrives into 3 sections, including one that holds Dell-specific information. I've not found good help on the Dell site for this situation. Is partitioning important for Dell? Necessary? Suggestions?
