Can I reboot my dell dimension 5150c desktop without getting the CDs from dell?

I need to re-boot my computer but because it had the harddrive replaced apparently i need the cds to do it dell aren't that helpful in the fact that the tech. dept. says i need to buy them now as my warrenty expired and the sales team say i can download them off the dell website!!!!Can I reboot my dell dimension 5150c desktop without getting the CDs from dell?OK. These are the facts:

1. legal retail XP copies are no longer sold. Unless you look anywhere on places like ebay or anywhere where you can get second hand things....

2. By purchasing a Dell system with an OS installed, you paid for the DELL XP license. You can buy the OS disk, and if you are in the US, it won't cost much more than US $10.

3. I don't mean to disparage anyone, but the sales dept from Dell... OK, they know half or less than half the facts about what they sell.

I am from tech support, supporting USA customers, and on my department we send the OS disk to computers with expired warranty, even if they had a limited (coterminous) contract as yours had. We need a Manager/supervisor/"L2" (senior, second tier agent) approval to send the disk, that's the global policy. We won't send you other applications, or a drivers disk, but we will send the XP disk if you need it.

What do I recommend on your case? Be firm, but not to the point to be rude or aggressive, on your request. If the agent says "no" bluntly, insist on speaking to a supervisor. And if even the supervisor denies the disk, ask him/her to get you transferred to sales (if you are willing to purchase) and ask the supervisor or the agent to speak to the sales representative before, so your request is completely understood.

I hope you can manage to get the disk, or at least to purchase it.

Best regards,

If by re-boot, you mean reformat, then the answer is no. Usually there is a partition (chunk) on the hardrive that comes with the computer for just an occasion and the disks that come with your computer (or at least they should have) are just an image of it. Since you replaced the hardrive and dont have the cd's, there is no way to restore your computer to factory settings. However, you can reformat with just a place windows cd if you have one but it will not have the drivers for your hardware. You will have to download and install those individually. If you do mean re-boot, hold the power button down. Can I reboot my dell dimension 5150c desktop without getting the CDs from dell? When you say cds yes you can download them from dell and no you can't.

All of the drivers can be downloaded from Dells website. The operating system will have to be downloaded from somewhere other than Dells website.

I assume you are running either Windows XP Pro or Windows XP Home. If you search Google for the windows home or pro iso, chances are you will find a place to download it from. Can I reboot my dell dimension 5150c desktop without getting the CDs from dell?
Actually, the only thing you can download is the drivers, not the whole operating system. My guess is to call Dell back, explain the situation again and say that your system did not come with the recovery cd's. Even though the warranty expired on my system, the dell tech was nice and sent them over. You do get those people that hate their job and wish that other experience the same pain, but there's nice one's if you're really patient. Another option is to purchase you're own operating system (windows), install it, and just go to www.dell.com to get the right drivers.

And if you don't want to spend any money and are will to do the research, you can install a linux distro and find linux drivers and work arounds to make you computer work again. Best part is depending on what you're looking for, most of the linux stuff are free and open source and there's community forums that have people who are willing to help you.Can I reboot my dell dimension 5150c desktop without getting the CDs from dell?If you had a new hard drive put in and I hope it's same make as the old yes you would need the disc from dell computers. If it was under warranty you should sent if back to dell. so now you paid for hard drive and you well have to buy the disc. I hope done by some one does warranty work for dell. Everything that is done under warranty must ok'ed by dell before work is done. Can I reboot my dell dimension 5150c desktop without getting the CDs from dell?
