Is it true that Dell memory cannot be substituted with generic ones?

I was told by someone about this - aparently Dell is making the memory stick or slots so that no other brand memory is compatible with the Dell machine. This has happened with newer machines it seems.....

How true is this? I want to buy a Dell but dont want to be buying upgrade memory from them - too expensive.Is it true that Dell memory cannot be substituted with generic ones?The person who told you this is clueless. You can put any manufacturers' memory into a Dell PC as long it is the correct type. Dell does not even manufacture their own memory. Go to crucial.com and plug the model of the system into their memory upgrade form on the main page.
