What the hell are these people talking about...? Have they even read any of the books you like? Sure doesn't sound like it.
Seriously dude, if you don't choose my answer as the best.. you're as crazy as these people recommending you strange books. Dragon Lance, Harry Potter, Shannara, you say? Sounds like exact catalogue. Game of Thrones was boring? Yes, that's entirely understandable.
Try these on for size:
The Belgariad (5 books) - David Eddings
Legend of Drizzt (13/14 books) - R.A. Salvatore
Death Gate Cycle - Margaret Weis %26amp; Tracy Hickman (Same people who wrote Chronicles)
Start out with those.
I agree with 'Joanne'
The Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices are a must as is The Hunger Games trilogy.
I also sugest you read
- The Chaos walking series. Now you'll get a bit confused by the writing because there are many misspelt words but that's deliberate. If you read up on it you'll understand what I mean. It's an amazing trilogy and I love everything about it. You should definitely try reading it.
- Wheel of Time is another series you may like. It's an epic series with 14 books in all and each book is as thick as the fifth HP book. Don't get put off though this series is fantastic. You'll be finished with all of the books before you even realise.
- I haven't as yet read Percy Jackson but I've heard the books are very well written and the story is great. They're also better than the movie (but books always are).
- Books by Robin Hobb are always a good idea too.Good fantasy/ fiction novels - 17 yr old?

Hi, you might want to try my fantasy series, entitled The Tales of Tanglewood, lightly influenced by Irish folklore and Celtic mythology. The first two books in the series are called "The Lon Dubh Whistle" and "The Curse of Satyr Stump"
You can download the first few chapters of each book for free at talesoftanglewood.com
Within the pages of the book, readers will discover Colin, a child who is fully aware of the hidden world of myth and wonder hiding within the woods just beyond his home, long kept secret by old magic. Only the fey magic which runs through his veins has enabled Colin to find what others cannot; the Tanglewood, the 'wood within the woods.
Full of odd characters and creatures of the fey, the Tanglewood is a world of magnificent folklore come to life. As Colin begins to explore the Tanglewood, he will find friendship with the ferrish Ailfrid, the elfin girl Deidre, and Doc Muffingrow, a wise druid.
In the first book, Colin will also find that there is much magic in himself, as well as dangerous enemies who will not let him find solace in the wood so easily. Ailil, King of the Sprites and ruler of The Below, has laid claim to his spirit, and Colin will need the help of his friends and quite a bit of magic to save himself.
You can check out the reviews at Amazon.com and both books are also available on the Amazon Kindle at a low price, and also at Smashwords.com in all other e-formats.Good fantasy/ fiction novels - 17 yr old?
His Dark Materials (a series)
Ender's Game (everyone should read this)
Drag'n Seek/DragonSnare (like Harry Potter--starts slow but has a wild ending)
The Seer and the Sword
Hunger Games (obviously)
The Giver (easy read but a classic)
Defenders of the Breach (a lot like the Shannara series)
believe it or not, Star Wars books by Zahn were pretty cool
The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare
The Infernal Devices Series by Cassandra Clare
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
Incarceron and Sapphique by Catherine Fisher
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld
Graceling and Fire by Kristin Cashore (this one is for lighter reading though because the stories are very straight forward and not as well written)
Try "Blackhole" 'Aghast' available on http://www.EnglishNovels.net and others too
The Bartimaeus Trilogy. One of the best series.
