I have almost finished A Game of Thrones, but recently encountered a lot of material from the second book, A Clash of Kings, despite trying to avoid spoilers.
Roughly speaking, how much of A Clash of Kings would remain "unspoiled" if a person had been made aware of the following:
Balon Greyjoy invades the North and occupies Winterfell and some other cities and towns.
The Tyrells of Highgarden help the Lannisters near the end of the book (probably abandoning their allies in the process).
Renly appears to die before the book ends.
Stannis was hoping to gain control over Renly's forces from Storm's End by having him killed (he may have attempted and succeeded).
The Dorne and Vale do not actively become involved in the War of the Five Kings during the second book.
A rift opens (or grows) between Tyrion and Ceresi. Ceresi tries to have Tyrion killed (unsuccessfully).
The Hill Tribes conduct some raids, but do not conquer any large portions of territory.A Clash of Kings from Song of Fire and Ice series; questions about these spoilers (Warning: spoilers in post)?
While you have inadvertently learned some of the politics and wars, there's an enormous amount of plot you don't know--such as the why and how of those events somebody spoiled for you.
I think if you enjoyed the earlier book, you should keep on reading. I very much doubt you'll be disappointed, since there's so very much more going on than what you know.
